Name: Megatron
From: Transformers Prime
Appearance:
Age: Old as dirt
Gender: Male
Personality:
First off, it should be mentioned that staying attached to reality is not one of Megatron’s strongest traits. Oh he visits it from time to time, but mostly he enjoys forging his own reality and going along with that. The world can’t exist without him in it after all. Several years alone in space and the constant exposure to Dark Energon has caused his sanity to decrease greatly, if not entirely disappear.
Sanity or insanity, it doesn’t matter, as Megatron’s cunning, fighting abilities, and leadership skills are still very much intact. He is powerful and he knows it. Not many can stand up in a fight against him, fair or otherwise, and he knows it. The only one who is capable of fighting toe-to-toe with him, and the only one who has the potential to defeat him, is Optimus Prime. In Megatron’s mind, if he defeats Optimus, he himself will become immortal.
So where do we begin with his conflict with Optimus Prime? Once they were close friends, and now they were enemies, as most tragic tales go. Optimus stole what Megatron believed was rightfully his, and he could never forgive him for this betrayal. He obsesses over it to the point where his greatest desire is to destroy Optimus completely from inside out. He wants to take everything that is dear to Optimus and crush it in his fist while the Prime is watching, and then he’ll finally put an end to Optimus himself. Oddly enough, Megatron probably has the highest option of Optimus out of everyone. Megatron knows his greatest enemy probably better than he knows himself, and they both reach a terrible sort of understanding whenever they do battle.
Once a Gladiator always a Gladiator, this is the truth for Megatron, formally known as Megatronus. A very long time ago he had been a Champion of the lower-caste people, and the hope for a Cybertron where everyone could experience the freedom to choose their own paths. Once upon a time he had believed in this completely, fighting with everything he had to make this a reality, and to free his world from the caste system. Going from the lowest of the low to a position of great power was intoxicating, and Megatron used that power to conquer everything. To him his life was always a Gladiator arena, there was no way anyone could ever convince him away from this mindset. Life was an endless battle, and only the strongest deserved to survive. The only way to achieve total victory is to destroy your opponent, there is no room for mercy.
Vicious, intelligent, and willing to take risks that no sane person would take, Megatron is a formidable opponent in terms of Leadership. His subordinates follow him out of a combination of loyalty and fear, the Warlord had a reputation for the things he did to traitors and deserters. He didn’t get his followers by snarling at them and demanding that they follow. No, he used his considerable charm and charisma to convince them to his side. Megatron is nothing if not an excellent performer. He knows how to work a crowd, and to inspire an audience through his speeches and actions.
This is a person who had destroyed his own world because of his ambitions. People didn’t agree with his views, so he immediately made them his enemies, and the only way to deal with enemies is to destroy them in the most violent ways possible. He doesn’t regret the loss of Cybertron, nor does he take credit in its destruction. To him, it was a joint effort between him and Optimus Prime. Ironic isn’t it?
Backstory: Megatron started out as D-16, a miner named after the mining shaft he worked in. After a while he tired of the mindless work he was doing down there and travelled to Kaon to seek his destiny elsewhere. In Kaon he discovered a talent for fighting in the Gladiator pits, and from there the fate of Cybertron was more-or-less decided.
Megatronus, as he had become known as, was a spectacular gladiator. Never once had he lost a battle, and he always made sure to put on his best performance for his audience, effectively winning them over to his side, and letting them begin to think that he was immortal. Look at this warrior who does not fear death! Look how he challenges it with every battle he is thrown into! Even before he began trying to change things, Megatronus was regarded as a hero.
It was from the Gladiator pits that the first stirrings of change began for Cybertron. Megatronus had noticed the state of things, how each Cybertronian was given their job from the very beginning, and how that job would become their destiny and their fate. He couldn’t accept this, for the freedom to choose their own path of life belonged to everyone, and he couldn’t have believed in this more if he tried. After each battle Megatronus began talking to his audience, trying to paint a picture with his words for them so they could see clearly what they could have. He wanted to show everyone what true freedom meant. He wanted to free Cybertron.
His preaching caught the interest of a librarian known as Orion Pax, and their first meeting set course to things that changed things forever. These two became fast friends, with Megatron serving as a sort of Mentor for Orion, and the two of them exchanged ideas and helped each other plan a better future for Cybertron altogether. Finally, after some time of talking and planning, the two of them were allowed before the council so Megatronus could try to change things. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as he had planned. The council did not appreciate how aggressively he demanded the title of Prime, even though he felt like there was no one else who deserved it more than him.
This was when Orion spoke up. Orion painted a picture of true peace to the council members, and they were awed by Orion’s passion. They decided that if anyone deserved to be a Prime, it would be Orion. Furious at this insult, Megatronus left the council meeting, and then plunged Cybertron into a long and vicious war.
Cybertron was reduced to a broken wasteland. Autobots and Decepticons alike left to seek energon reserves elsewhere in the universe. Optimus and Megatron eventually found there way to earth, where their conflict continued.
